-The manual

Haschel (ハッシェル, Hassheru, lit. "Haschel") is a playable character in The Legend of Dragoon. He is the Master of the Rouge School of Martial Arts and the Dragoon of the Violet Dragon.

Character Design[]

Haschel is an elderly martial artist with long black hair and thin shaped eyes that look closed. He wears a thin laced headband.

His outfit is a purple sleeveless martial arts garb with black designs and a black spike design at the back and a red belt which tuck into his garb, purple martial arts pants and black boots. He also wears red wristbands in both of his wrists.

As a Dragoon, Haschel resembles Kanzas, the original wielder of the Violet Dragoon spirit. He wears a violet Dragoon armor with sky blue accents and a green gem at the center as the violet outlines reaches through his white pants and a violet and white knee-high Dragoon armor boots with sky blue gem at the center. He also wears a matching violet gauntlets which are bulkier and wears a violet dragon headband and fights barehanded. The Dragoon wings on his back is a lighter shade of yellow and violet with sky blue outlines.

Personality[]

Outside of the battlefield, Haschel is upbeat, jovial and has a strong sense of humor. When fighting, however, Haschel is serious, calm and collected, and when the situation requires it, he does not shy away from using his martial skills. Due to his sense of humor and goofiness outside of battle, he blends in well with Meru.

In the past, he was shown to be an extremely strict teacher to his daughter, who was the designated heir to his school of Martial Arts, to the point of refusing to be called "father" by her during training, and insisting on being called "master" instead, and yelling at her in dissatisfaction about her skills and attitude.

Gameplay[]

Abilities and Attributes[]

Haschel is a well-rounded fighter with notably good speed (the third highest in the cast) and a strong physical attack, average physical defense and slightly below average magical attributes. His high agility allows him to get more turns than the majority of other characters. His survivability, despite having only average HP and defensive attributes, is still quite good, as he lacks any elemental weaknesses and is not as susceptible to magical damage as Albert and Kongol.

Haschel boasts a variety of additions (the second largest number of additions after Dart) that allow him to strike fast and hard. Haschel’s additions can be useful in many different ways, with Flurry of Styx and Hex Hammer being high damaging but low on SP, Summon 4 Gods being weak but granting lots of SP, and 5 Ring Shattering being a good all-around addition. While it requires some time and dedication to unlock his final addition, his good offense and speed makes up for this for the most part of the game, and eventually he is rewarded with the second strongest final addition of the cast with Omni Sweep.

Haschel, despite having numerous strengths, also has some drawbacks. His thunder element is a double-edged sword, particularly in regard to his Dragoon form. While it allows him to have no elemental weaknesses and grants him resistance against thunder magic, it also means he is unable to use elemental weaknesses of his opponents to his advantage. For this reason, his Dragoon form is arguably among the least impressive in the cast, despite gaining a high base 200% stat boost on magical attack. All of his Dragoon spells are single-target damaging spells without any further effects, and as such often do not leave a significant impact in a battle, which is further enhanced by his below-average magical attack.

Overall, despite a few drawbacks, Haschel is a competent and well-rounded character with strong offensive capabilities, while at the same time lacking any serious weaknesses. This makes him a fairly consistent character and a viable choice throughout the entire game.

Weapons[]

As a master martial artist, Haschel fights with his fists and feet, but uses knuckles and claws and additional weapons. His Destroyer Mace is the only weapon that can do more than one damage to a Unique Monster.

Name Attack Price Location Effect
Iron Knuckle 20 Initial
Beast Fang 31 250 Chest Black Castle, Queen Fury, Lizard Man Chance of causing Stun
Diamond Claw 37 300 Mappi (rare), Deningrad
Brass Knuckle 43 Windigo Chance of dealing instant death
Thunder Fist 49 400 Ulara Thunder element
Destroyer Mace 55 500 Moon +50% attack when <50% HP, +100% attack when <25% HP.

Armor[]

Similar to Kongol, none of the body armor that Haschel can wear can be worn by another group member, except for the Armor of Legend that everyone, male and female, can wear. Like Kongol, there is one helmet that he alone can wear. There are no restrictions on boots other than Male and Female.

Only Haschel can wear this helm:

Name Def. Mag. Def. Mag. Att. Price Location Effect
Soul Headband 5 5 25 200 Gehrich, Deningrad Gain SP from magic damage

These are body armors that can only be equipped by Haschel, in order of their defense:

Violet DG Armor 45 40 800 Moon Nullifies thunder damage

Additions[]

Main article: Additions

Haschel has the second largest amount of additions after Dart, which makes it slightly more difficult for him to obtain his final addition, as he requires a large amount of play time. His variety of additions have different strengths and weaknesses, with Flurry of Styx and Hex Hammer dealing high damage but only giving low SP, and Summon 4 Gods being weak but giving a full Dragoon round upon completion on its max level. 5 Ring Shattering can be seen as a great all-around addition with high damage and decent SP gain.

His final addition, Omni-Sweep, has the second highest damage multiplier of all final additions at 501% (just one percent stronger than Rose's Demon's Dance).

Acquiring the Dragoon Spirit[]

The Dragoon Spirit of the Violet Dragon, the fifth spirit obtained, is acquired after the battle with Doel. With the death of Doel, Dart decides to follow Lloyd to Tiberoa. The other dragoons, Rose, Shana, and Albert, agree to go with Dart as it is "fate." Haschel first intends to leave, but a bright light reveals his "fate", as the Dragoon spirit chooses him as its next wielder, and so he heads to Tiberoa with his fellow dragoons.

Dragoon Transformation[]

To transform into a Dragoon, Haschel is enveloped with lightning and thunder while charging himself. The white lightning forms his entire Dragoon armor and wings and once it is completed, he demonstrates his short martial arts moves while striking his pose.

Dragoon Magic[]

Main article: Dragoon Magic

Haschel's Dragoon Magic is exclusively single-target damage. With regards to his Dragoon form, his thunder element can be seen as a disadvantage, as it deprives him of the potential of using the elemental weakness of enemies to his advantage.

Atomic Mind Initial 10 Single enemy Thunder 50%
Thunder Kid 2 20 Single enemy Thunder 65%
Thunder God 3 30 Single enemy Thunder 75%

Before the events of the game[]

His daughter Claire ran away twenty five years before the start of the game for either seriously injuring or killing her training partner Lotta at Rouge. Around the same time, he kicks Gehrich out of the Rouge school of martial arts which reminds him of how he lost Claire and begins his search for his runaway daughter.  He meets Dart on his journey to pursue the Black Monster four years before the beginning of the game while still searching for Claire.

Haschel as Dart's Grandfather[]

The developers put a large number of hints and clues into the game that point to Haschel's runaway daughter Claire being the same Claire that became Dart's mother. In a twist of fate or irony, this means he actually met his grandson Dart years before the game's events take place, when they traveled together on an adventure without knowing of their relation.

At the beginning of Disc 2, first entering Tiberoa, one of the party notices that one of the town's bridges is named Claire Bridge. Dart says that is his mother's name, and Haschel says that it is the name of his daughter, who he began looking for 20 years ago, and jokingly adds that there might be some secret connection between him and Dart. However, there is quick consensus within the group that this unlikely, based on the fact that the two look nothing alike. Haschel does not add anything to that, but later flashbacks show that Claire also looks little like him.[1]

Early on Disc 3, At the mayor's house in Furni, Haschel listens as Shana sings a lullaby to the major's child Fa, and reflects that Claire once sang the same tune and declared that she would sing it to her future child. Shana tells Haschel that Dart used to sing it to her, to which a baffled Haschel says to himself, "So, it was not a coincidence for me to be here". Dart and Shana later reminisce about the song, confirming its source as a song Dart knew from childhood, giving the first real clue of the relationship of Dart and Haschel and indicating Haschel becoming aware of it.[1]

Before the final battle, Haschel tells Dart that Dart resembles Haschel as a young man.[1]

One more equivocal clue, weighing more on the side of Haschel as Dart's grandfather is on Disc 4, in The Moon That Never Sets. Haschel tells Dart that he must give Haschel and Claire privacy to talk, because Claire does not know about Dart yet (As she has yet to give birth to Dart in her current time), possibly hinting at that he now believes Dart to be his grandson. Trivia[]

  • Haschel's idle pose has him crossing his arms over his chest, and moving his head to the left slightly.
  • When defending, Haschel holds his arms and fists across his face and body.
  • When dispirited, Haschel lowers his fists and leans to the right, while rocking slightly with his head down.
  • When in Critical Health, Haschel slouches forward with his knees bent, and holds his stomach with his right arm and hand.
  • When completing "Flurry of Styx", there is a typo where it appears as "Ferry of Styx". While it is usually assumed "Ferry of Styx" is the typo, it is likely that the actual name of the addition in-game is a mistranslation. The Japanese name for this addition, 「三途の渡」(Sanzu no watashi) refers to the Sanzu River, the Buddhist equivalent of the river Styx. "Watasu" is a verb that means to cross or ferry over, making a literal translation something closer to "Crossing of the Sanzu." With the river Styx being an acceptable and more familiar translation of this term, it is likely that the intended translation was "Ferry of Styx" and was mixed up during localization, ending up with the erroneous "Flurry of Styx."
  • The Japanese name of Flurry of Styx also is a number reference, like his other addition names, as the literal translation of the Sanzu River's name is "River of Three Crossings." This being lost in translation causes a jump from 2 hits to 4 in the number names, when all other names correspond to the final number of hits in the attack (including the final hit on success).
  • In the German translation of the game, the display of his addition names in battles is glitched from Flurry of Styx onwards. Instead of displaying "Hagel des Styx" (the German translation of Flurry of Styx), the names of Summon 4 Gods, 5 Ring Shattering and Hex Hammer are displayed, but strangely with their number at their beginning omitted, leading to a bulky display of "Götter-Ruf Ring-Schlag Wge. 7 Leb."; their correct names are "4-Götter-Ruf", "5-Ring-Schlag" and "6 Wge. 7 Leb.". This glitch in the game script also causes the names of the following additions not being displayed properly, at Summon 4 Gods, the game says "Rundumhieb" (the German translation for Omni-Sweep), at 5-Ring Shattering no name is displayed at all, Hex Hammer displays the name "Harpune" (Harpoon) and Omni-Sweep displays the name "Wirbelstock" (Spinning Cane). The glitch apparently causes the game to shift the displayed addition names to those of Lavitz and Albert.
  • In the Japanese manual's credits, Haschel is credited as "Hatchel".[2]
